Blog 13 - 10 Hour Mentorship Check-in

1.   Where are you doing your mentorship?

• I am mentoring at Berlyn Elementary School in Ontario. 

2.   Who is your contact?  What makes this person an expert?

• My contact is Jessica Sosa. She's an amazing teacher and she loves what she does. 

3.   How many  hours have you done during the school year? (Summer Mentorship Hours and Mentorship Hours should be reflected separately in your Senior Project Hours log located on the right hand side of your blog).

4.   Succinctly summarize what you did, how well you and your mentor worked together, and how you plan to complete the remaining hours

• I've done so much in this time at my mentorship, I honestly feel like a useful asset to the classroom. I love working with my mentor, and the kids and I have really grown attached to each other. I'm very comfortable with my mentor and we work very well together. She leaves me sticky notes on the small tasks she needs me to do when she's busy, and we text each other any details that come up in class when either she isn't there, or I'm not. It's been amazing watching the kids grow so much from the very beginning of the year. I no longer have to help them spell their names, or tie their shoes. I've been able to be apart of all the skill building lesson plans and the fun learning atmosphere. I've already completed my hours, but that's not going to stop me from continuing to go to mentorship. I've already talked about my second independent component with my mentor. We will be beginning to do reading groups where she will be with the intensive reading kids and I;ll be doing guided reading with the rest of the class. I'm gonna be the teacher :)

2. What qualified this person as an expert in your topic choice?  

• Mrs. Sosa was mine and my sibling's first grade teacher, so I know she's a great teacher. She has been teaching for seventeen years, so I believe this makes her qualified to mentor me as a school teacher. 

3. List three questions for further exploration now that you've completed your summer hours.  

• How can a teacher ensure understanding among heir students?
• What type of preparation does a k-6 teacher need?
• How can the teacher personalize the learning?

4. What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?

• The most important thing that I've gained from this experience is perspective. I always thought that being a kindergarten teacher would be fun and easy, but now I see that I was right about the fun part. The teachers are always busy doing a million things at a time. Now I got a behind the scenes glimpse of the kindergarten chaos. 

5. What is your senior project topic going to be?  How did mentorship help you make your decision?  Please explain.

• My senior topic is going to be teaching children. I loved mentoring and helping the little kindergartners because their was never a dull moment. There is always something that needs to get done and although it's tiring work I'm sure that this topic will have plenty for me to research.
